In the history of women’s cricket, certain moments stand out for their rarity and significance. One such moment occurred during the 2012 Women’s T20 World Cup, when South African all-rounder Marizanne Kapp went viral for an unusual reason.
In a match against Pakistan, Kapp became the first player in Women’s T20 International cricket to be dismissed hit wicket. This dismissal not only marked an unwanted record for Kapp but also remains the only instance of a hit wicket in the tournament’s history.

The match was played between Pakistan and South Africa on October 3, 2012, during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup at Colombo, where Pakistan captain Sana Mir won the toss and elected to bat first.
Pakistan’s batters were able to put up only 87 runs on the board in 20 overs with South Africa tasked with an easy chase of 88 runs for the win. Marizanne Kapp and Trisha Chetty opened the innings for the Proteas, but unfortunately, in the third over, Kapp got hit wicket on the bowling of Bismah Maroof, where she scored only 1 run in 7 balls.
Pakistan managed to make a good game of it, bowling tight spells and taking the game to the penultimate ball, however, South Africa denied them the win. Shabnim Ismail was awarded the Player of the Match for her exceptional performance, picking up 3 wickets in 4 overs.
